Death to Evil Film School: Blaxploitation Rarities III – Blaxploitation Horror!

Friday, September 28th
Doors: 7:00 PM

Admission: $5 - $10 sliding scale

7:30 PM – House on Skull Mountain [1974]: Blaxploitation take on the standard “old dark house” horrors of the 30’s, this time with a little Voodoo.

9:15 PM – Sugar Hill [1974]: After her boyfriend is murdered by thugs, Sugar Hill (Marki Bey) decides to seek revenge by using Voodoo to unleash flesh eating ZOMBIES!

Sadly, this will be the last Evil Film School in Vancouver as I will be moving to Montreal on October 1st. Thank you to everyone who has come out to support us. Hopefully I will see a lot of you on the 28th.

9:15 PM – Expresso Bongo [1960]: Laurence Harvey (the original Manchurian Candidate) is the opportunistic manager who discovers Cliff Richard, a bongo playing singing sensation.

Other extra special thanks go out to Shawn Conner & the Georgia Straight for their recent profile of Evil Film School. Thanks for spreading the word about our little night.

7:30 pm: Curse of the Aztec Mummy [1957] – Reincarnated princes, evil doctors, ancient curses and a masked wrestler named El Angel abound in the second installment of the adventures of love-struck mummy Popoca.

9:00 pm: Santo and Blue Demon Versus the Monsters [1970] – Watch Santo and sometimes sidekick Blue Demon battle a Vampire, a weird Mexican version of Frankenstein’s monster, a Mummy, the Wolfman and a Cyclops!

And time permitting, an extra special bonus film! Hurray!

I also wanted to remind everybody that Evil Film School is seeking submissions for the 2nd Annual Monster Mash this October. We need horror shorts, 20 mins max to include in the shorts program to play before our feature presentation. Submissions can be on DVD/DVD-R or VHS, but please do not send originals as they will not be returned. Be sure to include your name & contact info including email address. Only films chosen for inclusion in the Monster Mash program will be contacted, but even if you don’t make the October cut you could still be included in future EFS programs. Submissions can be sent to:

7:30pm – Turkish Star Wars [1982]: Bizarre Turkish rip-off of the sci-fi classic with entire sequences stolen wholesale. Presented in Turkish with improvised English dialogue by Urban Improv!

9:15pm – Message from Space [1978]: Kinji Fukusaku (Graveyard of Honor, Battle Royale) directs this Star Wars cash-in movie with Sonny Chiba & Vic Morrow. Based on the manga by Shotaro Ishinomori (Kamen Rider, Kakida).

9:15pm: Can Hieromynus Merkin Ever Foget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness? [1969] - Written, directed by and starring Anthony Newly (who, you say?), it also stars Joan Collins as "Polyester Poontang". Regarded by some as one of the worst examples of self-indulgent '60's filmmaking.

Oh, and we're doing another Shatner double bill in May!

Just a reminder that Blaxpolitation Rarities II is happening this Friday, March 30th.

Doors open at 7pm, get there on time to get a good seat.

7:30pm - Black Shampoo [1976]: John Daniels (Candy Tangerine Man) plays Mr. Jonathan, a hairdresser as loved by the ladies as he is feared by the mob. When his new receptionist starts getting hassled by some mobsters, he takes matters into his own hands. With a chainsaw! Funny, fast & outrageous.

9:15pm - Savage! [1973]: Who cares what it's about, there's a big black dude named "Savage" with an all girl gang. And machine guns! Machine guns!

New York Sleazy! - Friday, February 23rd

In less than two weeks time, Evil Film School will return to it's usual last Friday of the month time slot. It's also my birthday, so if you get there earlier enough you can have some cake.

7:30pm - Telephone Boo k [1971] : Bizarre indie comedy about a girl trying to find her true love, the world's greatest obscene phone caller. Strange and explicit, it was rated X upon it's original release.

9:15pm - Who Killed Teddy Bear [1965] : Ten years after his tragic, sympathetic turn in "Rebel without a Cause", Sal Mineo stars a repressed pervert who stalks a beautiful DJ. Considered a lost grindhouse classic.

We're doing it again. Glogg, Crappy Santa re-gifting and, the cult classic "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians". Plus, weird holiday clips, cookies & lots of post-holiday cheer.

Q: What is Glogg?
A: A mulled wine beverage from Sweden. It is delicious.

Q: What is Crappy Santa re-gifting?
A: Didn't like something you got this year? Have a bunch of useless crap sitting around? Slap some wrapping paper on it and bring it down. You must bring a gift to participate & there will be a small prize for most hilarious gift.

Q: I already saw "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" on MST3K, do I hafta come?

Turkish Wizard of Oz - Not This Friday

Hey kids,

So, I finally managed to get my hands on a copy of The Turkish Wizard of Oz. And I'm pairing it with Darkside of Oz (you know, when you play the 1939 Wizard of Oz and Pink Floyd's Darkside of the Moon at the same time and marvel at how they sync up...)!

When: Thursday, November 30th

First Film: 7:30pm

"Herbal Refreshments" are recommended, although you will have to step out into the alley to indulge.

Have Halloween weekend plans yet? Well, now you do!

What - Evil Film School's First Annual Monster Mash

When - Friday Oct 27th

Doors - 7pm

Admission - $5 - $10 sliding scale

It's a Halloween Party with a horror shorts program, costume contest (with AWESOME) prizes and of course, the main attraction: The Monster Squad [1987]. Directed by Fred Dekker (House, Night of the Creeps) and written by Shane Black (Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang; Leathal Weapon), this is sure to be a major nostalgia fest for many of our regulars.

Remember, costumes are manditory, and if you don't have your own, one may be provided for you.

Shorts start at 7:30pm, costume contest stars at 8:30pm and The Monster Squad will be on around 9pm. Bring your friends!!

Hey Kids!

Thanks to everyone who showed up on Friday. It was a great solid turnout, some familiar faces, some new faces... some familiar people with new faces... And the movies were better than even I had expected (and I programmed them)! Oh, and for fans of Old Dracula, I highly recommend checking out the Hammer Studios vampire movies if you haven't already done so. Similarly atmospheric & well dressed, but played totally straight (for the most part). The Horror of Dracula & Dracula Prince of Darkness are two of my favs, although Dracula 1972 A.D. is a great guilty pleasure. Their Frankenstein series also kicks total ass. And for those who like their blood sucking with a little soul, Blacula is totally worth a look and much more faithful and creepy than you would expect. However, the sequel (Scream, Blacula Scream) is even better. Having Pam Greer as a Voodoo priestess kinda does that to a movie.

Which brings me to next month's program: Blaxploitation Rarities!

Where: blim (197 E. 17th Ave @Main)

7:30pm: Darktown Strutters [1975] -- Bizarre action-musical-comedy about an all girl biker gang taking on an evil fast food magnate who looks just like Col. Sanders. Starring Trina Parks (a.k.a. Thumper from "Diamonds Are Forever"). Did I mention it's a blaxploitation MUSICAL?!?! "Refreshments" highly recommended.

9pm: The Candy Tangerine Man [1975] -- Sleazy, violent and unrelenting. Directed by Matt Cimber (The Witch Who Came From the Sea), and starring John Daniels (Black Shampoo). Samuel L. Jackson's favourite pimp movie. Need I say more?

Admission: $5 - $10 on a sliding scale.

Fang In Cheek! Fri Aug 25

First off, a big thank you to everyone who made it out to Summer Camp last month.

Second, we're doing it again! This month's theme is Vampire Comedies!

7:30pm -- Sundown, The Vampire in Retreat [1991]: Count Dracula (David Carradine) thinks he's got it made after retiring to the Western town of Purgatory, a sort of Fort Lauderdale for vampires. They're all non violent and drink a blood substitute. Unfortunately, he didn't count on a bumbling descendant of Van Helsing (BRUCE CAMPBELL, yes, that Bruce Campbell) or a rogue band of vamps intent on returning to the old ways. Extremely goofy and silly, it's still a rather unique take on an old tale. And just think, Ash vs. Bill. That's gotta be worth something, right?

9:30pm -- Vampira (a.k.a. Old Dracula) [1974]: David Niven stars as the count, and Teresa Graves (a.k.a. TV's Christie Love) stars as his lady love Vampira after a faulty blood transfusion turns her black. No really. Tries to be sort of an English version of "Young Frankenstein", but doesn't quite live up. Worth a look if only for the unflappable Niven and of course a whole host of hotties including Graves and the lovely Jennie Linden.

As usual, beer & popcorn will be available.

Summer Camp! July 28

Hey All,

Just a quick reminder that the next Evil Film School is happening next Friday (July 28th) @ Blim.

Doors: 8pm
Start: 8:15pm

First Film: Mooch Goes to Hollywood [1971] -- Very strange children's film co-written by Jim Backus about a lovable tramp named Mooch who comes to LaLaLand to become a star. Along the way she's helped by Zsa Zsa Gabor, Vincent Price and a whole host of Hollywood who's who (including a very creepy Mickey Rooney). Short & sweet (50 min running time), it's worth seeing if only for the scene where a 70+ Vincent Price runs along a beach with open arms towards the Benji-like Mooch.

Second Film: I Woke Up Early the Day I Died [1998] -- Dialogue free film based on a script by Ed Wood, starring Billy Zane & almost anyone else who was famous in the late 90's. Was a bit of a vanity project for Mr. Zane who allegedly sank his own money into the film, which has not really seen the light of day in America, save a few festival appearances shortly after it was made. The lack of dialogue and expressionistic acting lend it the feeling of a highly demented silent film and an awesome and omnipresent soundtrack ensure that the audience is always engaged. Note: Although there is no dialogue, this the occasional voice over or title card. Because the only source print is of German origin, these will be entirely in German with no subtitles.

Admission: $5 - $10

Popcorn & Beer (recommended) will be available from the bar.

Evil Film School: Good News/Bad News

So the good news is that there will be an Evil Film School tonight (June 30)!!

Now for the bad news: Turkish Wizard of Oz has not come in. Despite being ordered over a month ago, and several attempts to contact the supplier, it looks unlikely that I'll have it in time for tonight's screening. However, there is an alternate and it's almost as good:

Alyas Batman en Robin [1993] -- That's right, it's the Philipino Batman and Robin musical!! Charming and hilarious. In Filipino/Tagalog with a good smattering of nonsensical English.

There will still be a shorts program before the main event, so come early so you don't miss out.

8:15pm: Mooch Goes to Hollywood [1971] – Bizarre 70’s kid flick involving an ambitious mutt who strives to be a star with some help from Zsa Zsa Gabor. Also featuring Vincent Price and a cavalcade of stars including, Mickey Rooney, Cesar Romero, Phyllis Diller, Darren McGavin and Sam Jaffe. Narrated by Richard Burton.

9:30pm: I Woke Up Early the Day I Died [1998] – From a script by Edward D. Wood Jr. This little seen film features Billy Zane in a masterful performance as an escaped mental patient who spends a good deal of the film in nurse drag. There is no dialogue, only the occasional voice over and the supporting cast has to be seen to be believed (Tippi Hedren, Ron Perlman, Christina Ricci, Andrew McCarthy, Ann Magnuson, Bud Cort, Taylor Negron, Max Perlich, Will Patton, Rain & Summer Phoenix, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Tara Reid, John Ritter, Rick Shroder, Nicollette Sheridan, Steven Weber, Karen Black, Sandra Bernhard, Eartha Kitt, Leif Garrett, Dana Gould, Vampira and MANY more). A rare treat.

Admission is on a sliding scale of $10 - $5.

Evil Film School Presents: Superhero Night!!

Legends of the Superheroes [1979] & 3 Dev Adam a.k.a. Turkish Spider-man [1973]

That's right, the TV show that makes The Star Wars Holiday Special look good & a Turkish whirlwind of a movie featuring Captain American (sorta) and Santos (sorta) fighting a homicidal Spider-man (sorta).

Doors: 8 - 11 pm

Admission by donation ($5 Suggested)

The (kind of) Official Den of Sin Manifesto

The Den of Sin movies nights started as a way for my husband and I to catch up on our film viewing, introduce our friends to new & unusual cinema specimens, and as a way for me to practice my programming skills.

In general, films shown at the Den of Sin are of an exploitive or trashy nature with special attention given to genre (horror, sci-fi, fantasy) movies, although we have shown classics, musicals, comedies and a drama or two. We also have a predilection towards Asian and Eurotrash, although usually we just show whatever we want as long as too many people haven't seen it before.

With Evil Film School, we will be diving further into the Trash pit with a focus on found footage and bootlegs, but we would also like to start showing more local film and we will be accepting submissions of short films of an exploitive or genre nature for inclusion in future programs.

The original Den of Sin is also the basis for my regular column of Film Threat and has inspired many crazy movie nights all over North America.

Crappy Santa Gift Exchange

This game was played at the previous 2 Xmassacres and was very well received so we've decided to let everybody play this year.

If you're coming to the Xmassacre, please bring a wrapped (important) gift of no more than $5. It's actually better if you can get away with not spending any money, as the goal is humour value. Make something. Recycle a gift. Bring something you found on the side of the road. It's all good, just as long as it will bring a smile to the face of the person opening it. Or at least those around the person opening it.

Those who bring a gift will be given a ticket which will allow them to pick another gift (not their own) out of the pile.
